    An SPD (Surge Protective Device) is an important element for protecting electrical equipment from impulse surges that occur as a result of lightning strikes or other switching in the power grid.

    When, for whatever reason, the mains voltage increases sharply, the resistance of the semiconductor element of the surge protector instantly drops to its minimum value. As a result, current flows through the protective device to the ground loop, creating an artificial short circuit that trips the circuit breaker or fuse and de-energises the mains.

    If the overvoltage was insignificant, the SPD indicator will remain green, the resistance of the varistor will increase and the network will continue to operate in normal mode; if the overvoltage significantly exceeded the maximum operating voltage, the SPD indicator will change to red, indicating that the device needs to be replaced.

    SPDs can have different protection classes and are designed to handle different types of overvoltage. It is important to select and install an appropriate SPD according to the specific conditions of use of the electrical equipment.

    The use of SPDs can significantly reduce the risk of damage or failure of electronics and electrical equipment, which helps to ensure stable and reliable operation of electrical networks.
